USGPIVC (Ultrasound Guided Peripheral Intravenous Cannulation) Course

Friday 1 November – 9:00 – 10:30

The USGPIVC course which will be run onsite at ASUM 24 provides the fundamental knowledge and practical skills for when ultrasound is required to gain peripheral intravenous access. We are pleased to provide an update to the requirements for this course, with the online learning course no longer required to be completed before the conference, though it is still recommended. Registrations are limited, but still available.

Please note that a certificate of course completion will be available to those who complete all course components.

The course is blended, consisting of:

  1. An online learning course, which is best completed in conjunction with the face-to-face workshop. The online learning covers the underpinning theory including an introduction to ultrasound and the machine, vascular device selection and decision making, the aseptic approach and insertion techniques.
  2. The face-to-face workshop on Friday morning 9:00-10:30am Nov 1st at the W Brisbane.  The simulation based workshop then focuses on the practical skills needed to safely perform ultrasound guided peripheral intravenous cannulation.

Understanding Multi-System Scanning Workshop / Neuraxial US (PoCUS)

Saturday 2 November – 16:00 – 17:30

Come and rub shoulders with the experts who have presented at the ASUM conference! Ask them those burning questions you might have and learn some tips and tricks in a live model scanning workshop. This is a Practical scanning session for all participants to learn and apply scanning skills in Lung, Cardiac POCUS, upper and lower limb nerve blocks, lumbar spine ultrasound, plus many more.  This session will be led by Specialists in Anaesthetics, Pain Management, POCUS, Cardiac Ultrasound and Rural/ Remote Ultrasound.

Pelvic Floor Workshop

Sunday 3 November – 8:30 – 10:30 / 11:00 – 12:30 / 13:30 – 15:00 (three sessions)

Facilitator: Dr Vivien Wong

This workshop will be a detailed and comprehensive instruction in the anatomy and techniques required for ultrasound assessment of the Pelvic Floor. Led by Urogynaecologist Dr Vivien Wong, the workshop will consist of sessions of didactic lectures, demonstrations and practical scanning. The aim of this workshop is to give a greater understanding of the anatomy, techniques and measurements required in pelvic floor ultrasound and to give greater confidence in performing this technique.

Building Phantom Models Workshop

Sunday 3 November – 11:00 – 12:30

This hands-on session with Dr David Herd will show you how to build a cost-effective high-fidelity single-use ultrasound phantom models for needle procedure practice.

WFUMB RHD Screening Workshop

Sunday 3 November – 13:30 – 15:00

Faculty: Jo McCann, Gillian Whalley, Ellen Woodstock, Jacqui Williamson

Abbreviated screening for asymptomatic rheumatic heart disease (RHD) has been shown to increase the identification of high-risk children and enable them to access life-saving penicillin treatment. RHD screening using focussed ultrasound is different to clinical echocardiography and has been refined to an effective single view protocol. In this workshop, we will teach you the basics of RHD screening.

Ideally suited to sonographers (of all specialties) and doctors, nurses and allied health professionals familiar with POCUS. No cardiac experience needed.

Demonstration Only Workshops (No Hands-On Element)

Endometriosis Workshop

Friday 1 November – 11:00 – 12:30

Facilitators: Ms Rebecca Long and Dr Sofie Piessens

Endometriosis is one of the most common and challenging gynaecological disorders, affecting 10-15% of women in the reproductive age group. Common symptoms include pelvic pain, pain with periods, pain with sex, bowel pain during periods, and infertility. Assessing the pelvis for deep infiltrating endometriosis in patients presenting with those symptoms is an important part of identifying their cause. An assessment for deep infiltrating endometriosis during every gynaecological ultrasound can lead to earlier diagnosis of endometriosis, reduction of surgical risk, the possibility to use medical therapy prior to surgery, and improvement of pre-operative planning if surgery is required

Cardiac / Abdominal 101 Presentations, Demonstrations and Discussion

Friday 1 November – 13:30 – 15:00

An introduction to POCUS scanning of the heart, lungs and abdomen for those who are already scanning the abdomen into areas such as lung, heart, and areas of the abdomen that are relevant in point of care, rural and remote settings. This session will consist of lectures and demonstrations by POCUS, cardiac and Rural Remote Specialists.
